NY Defensive Driving

Defensive Driving Courses have been available to drivers in New York for Point & Insurance Reduction for many years.  Originally, the only way to complete a New York Defensive Driving course was to attend a classroom New York Driving School.  For most people, this meant giving up 6 hours on a weekend or on weekday evenings.  Although the students of the NY Defensive Driving course would receive a 10% insurance discount for taking the course, students would often avoid attending the NY Defensive Driving Course because of it's length and due to the fact that in most cases, it was BORING.

Thankfully, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has allowed certain NY Defensive Driving Course providers to offer the class online.  That's right, you can now sit in the comfort of your own home and complete the New York Defensive Driving Course.  You may have some questions regarding this and if you do, we have got the answers.  Below you will find a list of commonly asked questions.

Q. How long does the Defensive Driving class take?
A. The class is still 6 hours long but, you can now take the NY Defensive Driving course in
    multiple sessions.  You can take the class for an hour and come back the next day and
    take it for 15 minutes etc.  You take the course at your convenience.

Q. Do I still receive a NY Insurance Discount?
A. Absolutely!  New York law guarantees that you will receive a 10% reduction on your
    collision and liability coverages after completing a Defensive Driving course.
    This discount will last for 3 years. 

Q. What about point reduction?  Will an online NY Defensive Driving course still remove
     points from my license?
A. Yes it will.  If you complete a New York approved online defensive driving course,
    you will have 4 points reduced on your driving record.

Q. Okay you sold me on it.  Who has an approved Defensive Driving course and where can I
     take it?
A. American Safety, Inc. has an approved online NY Defensive Driving course.

Q. Are there any hidden fees?  I mean are they going to charge me $50 for the course
    and then charge me another $20 to mail me the certificate.
A. That's a great question.  We have heard of this being done in other states.  With the
    sites mentioned above, we no there are no hidden fees.  They will charge extra for
    optional services such as Fedex or UPS overnight shipping but standard certificate
    delivery is free.
